HELPFUL TIPS:
Being prepared can make this event a whole lot more fun! Practice makes perfect. Get used to expressing yourself with chalk and soft pastels on a patterned sidewalk background in the same sized space as the competition spaces (28" across and 22" tall). Try out your design several times before the competition. This way you will know exactly what to expect and how long it will take you to complete your artwork. Most designs improve dramatically with each new drawing. The North bank River Walk in front of the Duval County Courthouse is a great place to practice, especially on the weekends when parking is free. The pavers there are very similar, if not exactly like, the ones at The Landing. Be sure to bring a brush or enough water to erase your finished product. Technically, although not permanent, unauthorized chalk drawings can be considered graffiti! Besides you don't want the competition to see what you are planning any way. :)
Items you may find helpful to bring with you to the competition:
A drawing or at least an idea of what you will be creating before you start.
A low stool or plastic container that you can sit on. Some people also brought a seat cushion and knee pads.
Baby wipes to wash chalk off of hands to avoid mixing chalk colors when blending.
A piece of paper or poster board to lay over your art while you work to help you avoid smudges.
A plastic grocery bag to use as a blending tool.
A small painters brush to whisk away any stray lines.
A hat and sunglasses.
If you have lived in Florida very long then you know that November weather is unpredictable, it can be hot or cold but you will want to wear sunscreen no matter the temperature.
The Landing is a fantastic location and has a large variety of options for Great Food and Refreshing Beverages so there is no need to bring any supplies other than those used to create art. Coolers will not be permitted. You should be able to find whatever you need among the fine restaurants along the Riverfront or upstairs within the food court or within the many specialty shops. :)
